This is actually my sister’s t-shirt design for 2011 Lab Week (she is a medical technologist). I thought her design was really cute. She drew the design, and I colored and cleaned it up. The top part was on the front, and the bottom part was on the back of the t-shirt. I thought people should get the opportunity to enjoy her artwork (she does not have a deviantart).

I hope everyone is staying cool this summer! My professor once told us, “Your body ‘exercises’ itself just trying to keep a normal body temperature!”. Be a nerd like me. When people are complaining about how hot it is….excitedly state you are metabolically exercising! You may receive a few puzzled looks…

I found myself trying to explain Phagocytosis to a nonscience person — and this is how I did it. To me, pseudopods remind me as arms. When they extend around whatever is being phagocytosed, the phagocytosing cell looks like it is trying to give something a hug! The bacteria/substance/etc receiving this “hug” will most likely face some sort of degradation ending their “life”. Hence, Phagocytosis = hug of death!!!

Ohhhh….and this little guy is MΦ (pronounced “Moe”) the Macrophage. You’ve already have seen him in the Little Red Rubella Virus, and you will most certainly see him again. :)

Happy VALENTINE’S DAY! or SA (single’s awareness) day!!! I am celebrating the second since I haven’t exactly found the person who lights my Bunsen Burner :3

For all you people swapping spit and possibly other bodily fluids, remember this: your microbial friends are swapping plasmids within you too!!! So make sure you tell them “Happy Conjugation Day!”

For those of you who do not know what conjugation (i.e. “to conjugate”): well, it is the process of a “male” bacterium encountering a “female” bacterium. Then, the “male” extends “his” pili until in contacts the “female”. Plasmids pass through the pili entering the “female”. Thus, this explains the act of conjugation — or sometimes referred to as bacterial sex.

This week’s comic is posted today (Monday) instead of the normal Wednesday/Thursday update.

Snow Day! Well, not for me. :( Unlike most other people, I live in a place where snow is mythical. We dream of snow when we only get ice. When the last cold spell came through, I dreamed of what kind of snowman I could make. Here were a few ideas. I hope you stay warm!

Interesting fact: Rubella is derived from Latin meaning “little red” (or at least according to Wikipedia). I thought it would be suitable to have the Little Red Riding Hood version of the Rubella virus being gobbled up by the Big Bad Macrophage. I made Rubella’s envelope red to symbolize the “cape”. Also, Rubella virus causes the German measles which results in a red rash. WOW! I have a lot of red going on! I doubt there is a “chomping” noise during phagocytosis — but I wish there was! Anyway, enjoy until next week!

So, this is what I have been up to instead of comics. It was for a creative class project (Medical Microbiology). We were supposed to pick a disease, and then we were supposed to make a “creative” project based either on the disease symptoms or the life cycle of the disease’s etiological agent. There is an inside joke within this video. My med micro professor told us in lecture one day that you can avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases by leaving the light on — and if things look funky, then you probably shouldn’t proceed. When presenting this video to my class, I pretended I was from a new organization trying to aware the public about STDs. The name of my fake organization was called “Leave the Lights On”, and the picture of the girl, guy, and the lamp was our logo.

It probably does not happen this way….but what if enzyme reactions were like relationships? Think of all the business Eharmony and all of those dating sites could get. They always tell people they have “chemistry”. What if it is just “biochemistry”. Oh wow…now I have the song “Let’s get Physical” stuck in my head. :P

Ubiquitinated protein get degraded by the proteosome…However, a protein not ubiquitinated will not be degraded.

The phrase came from “Fear me, if you dear.” from Puss in Boots in Shrek 2.
